Most Dangerous Pests in Our Area
With how warm the climate is throughout the year, it’s no surprise there are plenty of pests that love to call the Sunshine State home. While most of those creepy critters are relatively harmless to humans, there are some that can pose a threat to your health and safety. Here are three of the most dangerous pests in Spring Hill.
Be Careful of the Bees and Wasps
Bees and wasps are social insects that live in colonies and can cause serious problems around your home. If you bother their nests, they will aggressively defend them by stinging you. In most cases, the sting injects venom that acts as a nerve agent. Although getting stung by a bee or a wasp usually only involves pain and redness, it can cause death in people who are allergic. Two of New Jersey's most widespread bees and wasps include the bumble bee and the paper wasp.
Signs of Bee and Wasp Infestation
- You notice a fair amount of bees and wasps buzzing around your home.
- You find bee and wasp nests around your home, such as under siding or in the gutters.
Symptoms of the Zika Virus
Although the number of reported cases of the Zika virus have declined in 2017, the threat of contracting this disease still exists. To prevent an infected mosquito from biting you, make sure you protect your property from infestation by applying repellent when outdoors and getting rid of standing water around your home. If you’ve been bitten by a mosquito and suffer any one of the following symptoms, contact a healthcare professional immediately.
- Headache
- Fever
- Rash
- Conjunctivitis
- Joint pain
- Muscle pain
Stay Away From These Venomous Spiders
There are many spiders common, including the jumping spider and the crab spider, but none are more dangerous than the brown recluse and the black widow. Both spiders have venom poisonous enough to harm humans.
There are four species of the widow spider: the southern black widow, the northern black widow, the red widow and the brown widow. Female widow spiders have a glossy and jet black body, with a signature bright red mark located on the underside of their abdomen. The males are usually brown or gray. Widow spiders are nocturnal.
They are usually brownish in color with a darker violin-shaped marking on their back. Since there are some other species of spiders that look similar, many homeowners often confuse a brown recluse for another spider or vice versa.
